DNS (Domain Name System)

DNS (Domain Name System) is a distributed network resource naming system that associates various data about these resources with domain names on the Internet or a private network in order to obtain information on domains.

A distributed DNS database is supported using an hierarchy of DNS servers that interact over a particular protocol.

Most often, DNS is used to obtain the IP address of a host (computer or device) by its domain name.
