MPEG-2 is a standard for coding the video data and audio data related to it. The standard contains a description of the methods of lossy compression of audio and video data. Although MPEG-2 is not so efficient as such newer standards as H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC, its backward compatibility with the existing hardware and software ensures its wide usage, for example, in digital television.
